Inspired from the famous Mauritian ‘gateau patate’, this sweet potato pastry filled with 5 spice pork brings together the light sweetness of the sweet potatoes and the awesome Chinese 5 spice flavor to the palate.
Easy to prepare, it is a must have at parties or when having friends around.
Sweet potato dough:
- 500g sweet potato
- 2 tablespoons white flour
5 spice pork:
- 100g minced pork
- 1/2 onion finely chopped
- 1.5 teaspoon Chinese 5 Spice powder
- salt and pepper to taste
- vegetable oil
Sweet potato pastry:
Wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly and boil until soft when pricked with a knife. When done, let it cool then peel and mash into a uniformly smooth paste.
Add the flour to the sweet potato and mix together until the new paste is completely uniform. Add more flour as needed.
Make individual dough balls and roll them into rounds.
5 spice pork:
Mix the minced pork with the 5 spice powder, salt, and pepper.
Heat up your wok on high heat and add 1 teaspoon of oil. Once the oil is hot, throw in the onion, and cook until brown. Then add the pork and cook until brown making sure to remove any water/juice that is released.
5 spice sweet potato pork pastry:
Once you have your round sweet potato pastry and pork ready, add a bit of pork at the center of the dough and fold over. Make sure that the edges are properly sealed.
In a wok, add enough oil to cover the pastry. Heat the oil and then reduce to a medium fire.
Add the filled pastry one at a time and cook until golden!
My mouth is watering just writing down this recipe! Serve it with some chili sauce; Mauritian style!
Why not enjoy a delicious Thai basil infusion with that new recipe.
